Asphalt Driveway Replacement
Replacement means the old driveway leaves the property. We tear out or mill the asphalt, load it, and haul it off. Then we look at what it was sitting on, because that is usually the reason you are calling. Thin stone, soft clay, or no stone at all turns up more often than anything else.

Asphalt Resurfacing and Overlays
An overlay is a new surface course laid on top of the old driveway, bonded down with tack coat. It is the right answer on a specific driveway: worn and cracked on top, solid underneath, draining properly, no ruts, no alligatoring. On that driveway an overlay buys you years for a fraction of a replacement.

Asphalt Patching and Repair
A pothole is a hole with a reason under it. A permanent repair gets cut square, dug down to solid material, and filled with hot mix compacted in place. Cold patch out of a bag stops a tire from dropping in it. It is a bandage until the crew gets there, not a fix.

New Driveway Paving
First-time paving on raw ground gives us the one thing a replacement never does: we decide the pitch before anybody digs. Water has to leave the driveway somewhere. We stake the layout, set the fall, and cut the excavation deep enough that the finished surface lands where you want it.

Sealcoating
Asphalt emulsion sealer protects a sound surface from water and sun. That is the whole job description. It fills nothing structural, and it does not bridge a crack you can put a finger in. Cracks get filled first, then the sealer goes over the top. Never the other way around.
Plan on a coat every second or third year. Spring after spring, the coating stacks up until it splits and lifts away in sheets. New asphalt waits roughly six months to a year, because it has to cure first. More on sealcoating.

Why Asphalt Driveways Fail
Every paving company in this market will show you a photograph of a black driveway. Very few of them write down what is underneath it. That part decides how long yours lasts, so here it is.
Asphalt Is a Flexible Pavement
Asphalt does not carry weight the way a concrete slab does. It bends slightly under a wheel and spreads that load down into the stone and the ground below. The base carries the load. The asphalt spreads it and keeps water out. Build the base wrong and the surface has nothing to hand the weight to.
Alligator Cracking Is Base Failure
A web of interconnected cracks across your driveway, the pattern that looks like reptile hide, is the ground under the asphalt moving under load. It is not surface wear and it is not age. The asphalt is breaking up because it has nothing solid to sit on. This is the single most useful thing a homeowner can learn about a driveway, and it is the one pattern that points at replacement rather than resurfacing.
Nothing on Top Fixes Something Underneath
Sealer sits above the problem. Crack filler sits above the problem. A fresh two-inch overlay sits above the problem. New asphalt over a failed base cracks again in the same web, in the same places, inside a few years. The old cracks work their way up through the new layer. That is reflective cracking, and it is the most expensive lesson in this trade.
Match the Fix to the Failure
There is an honest ladder here, and a contractor who quotes an overlay without checking the base is quoting the cheap answer. Checking the base means looking at the cracking pattern, the ruts, where water stands after a rain, whether the edges are gone, and where the drive has dropped. Here is how it sorts out.

The Base Is Half the Job
Under a residential driveway sits roughly six to eight inches of compacted crushed stone, on a subgrade that got compacted first. Angular crushed stone locks together under a roller. Round river gravel rolls. And the stone goes in as thin lifts, each one compacted before the next arrives. Dumped and graded in one pass, it is loose rock with a smooth top.
Two Courses, Not One
Hot mix goes down twice. A binder course of coarser mix carries the load, roughly two inches compacted. A surface course of finer mix goes over it, roughly an inch and a half to two inches compacted. Three to four inches of compacted asphalt is the working residential figure. One two-inch lift on its own is an overlay with a driveway's name on the invoice.
Compacted Inches Beat Laid Inches
Hot mix arrives fluffy and the roller squeezes about a quarter of the depth out of it. So the number that matters is what is left after compaction. Ask any bidder to write the word compacted next to the inches. The ones building it properly will not hesitate.
Hot Mix Has to Stay Hot
Asphalt leaves the plant near three hundred degrees. It has to be laid and rolled before it cools, or it never reaches density and it ravels apart later. That is why a crew moves fast, why the truck order matters more than it looks, and why nobody pours a driveway in November.
Edges Die First
An asphalt driveway has no curb behind its edge. Wheels ride that edge with nothing holding it. A proper edge runs the stone base out past the asphalt, gets raked and rolled to a taper, and has soil brought up level with it afterward. An edge standing proud over a drop-off crumbles a piece at a time, every winter, and a plow blade takes the rest.
Water, Then Frost
Pitch is not decoration. A driveway needs real fall across it so rain runs off instead of standing. Water that sits finds every seam and soaks the base. Then it freezes, swells, and lifts the asphalt above it. It does not settle back level. A flat driveway in this climate is a driveway on a timer.
Why a Cheap Driveway Fails
Four causes, and it is this same four every time. Not enough compacted base. Base laid on soft or wet subgrade. Too little compacted asphalt. No fall for the water. Any one of them shortens a driveway's life. All four together end it inside a handful of years.
Height at the Garage and the Street
An overlay raises your driveway by about two inches. At the garage that can bury the bottom of the door and put water at the threshold. At the street it leaves a lip where the apron meets the pavement. A replacement resets the grade instead of stacking on it. That is a real reason to replace, and it is checkable with a tape measure.

Asphalt prices per square foot, so a driveway that size usually lands somewhere in the low five figures for a full replacement and less for a first-time pave on raw ground. The range is wide because of what sits inside it. Total size, compacted asphalt depth, compacted base depth, whether the old driveway comes out and gets hauled off, how much grading the fall requires, whether a triaxle and a paver can reach the work, and any drainage that has to be fixed. A replacement runs above a new pave of the same size, because tear-out and haul-off are real work with real trucking behind them.
Can you put a new layer of asphalt over old asphalt?
Yes, and on the right driveway it is the smart buy. The conditions are specific. The base has to be solid, the surface has to drain with no standing water, and there can be no alligator cracking and no rutting. Meet all three and an overlay bonded down with tack coat gives you a long stretch of good driveway. Miss any of them and the old cracks come up through the new layer in the same pattern within a few years. There is a second thing nobody mentions: an overlay raises the surface about two inches, which can bury the bottom of your garage door and leave a lip out at the street.
Is 2 inches of asphalt enough for a driveway?
Not on its own. Two inches compacted is the standard thickness for an overlay or for a surface course, and it does that job well. A driveway built from scratch wants three to four inches of compacted asphalt in two courses, sitting on six to eight inches of compacted stone. Read the word compacted carefully, because hot mix loses about a quarter of its depth under the roller. Two inches off the truck is not two inches in your driveway.
How long does an asphalt driveway last?
Fifteen to twenty years is the honest working answer, and a well-built one that gets crack filled and sealed on schedule goes well past that. Thickness and base depth decide it, not brand of asphalt and not sealer. Driveways that fail early were built thin on a poor base, and no amount of sealcoating rescues one. Northern Illinois winters are the load that finds the difference between the two.
How often should you sealcoat a driveway?
Two to three years apart is right for this climate. Any tighter than that and sealer builds up into a thick skin that cracks and peels away in sheets, which looks worse than bare asphalt. A brand new driveway waits roughly six months to a year before its first coat so the mix can cure. Fill the cracks first, always. Sealer protects a sound surface and does nothing at all for a failed base.
What causes alligator cracking in a driveway?
The base underneath has failed. Water got into it, or it was never deep enough, or it never got compacted properly, or the driveway is carrying more weight than it was built for. Usually two or three of those together. This is the one cracking pattern that means replacement instead of resurfacing, because every repair option laid on top of it is sitting above the actual problem. Sealer, filler, and a new overlay all fail the same way over alligatoring.

Both are good and they are good at different things. When can you pave a driveway in Rockford?

Deep Frost Into Heavy Clay
Rockford sits well inland. Erie and South Bend get lake water moderating their winters and dumping snow. We get the plain continental version instead, and it drives frost about three feet into the ground. Underneath that frost line sits clay.
Clay and frost make a bad pair for pavement. Clay holds water rather than letting it drain away. Water in the subgrade freezes, expands, and lifts everything above it. The same ground sits under your driveway. Nobody posts a sign at the end of it.
The fix is boring and it works. A real depth of compacted crushed stone replaces clay with material that drains. Water that leaves the base is water that cannot freeze in it. Where the clay runs soft, geotextile fabric goes down first, so the stone stays stone instead of slowly disappearing into mud. Stone goes in thin lifts at the right moisture and gets compacted each time. This is the whole argument for base depth in this market, and it beats any argument about rain.
One note on the calendar. Hot mix season runs about May through October and the plants close for winter. Spring is failure season here, so the phone rings in April and May from people whose driveways moved over the winter. Measuring and pricing carry on through every month. Paving waits on the ground, and saturated or frozen ground pushes a start date back.
